PSC .22 RF BR Shoot

Date: March 10, 2024
It was not a great weather day in Petti; it was overcast with snow flurries and possible rain expected. Probably why the smaller than usual turnout.

No mirage. Winds were constant with few breaks, ranging 12-21km Easterly. And we had John shoot a 500score; congrats. We had a run on X’s too!

Everyone got home before the weather got worse. Thanks to all who helped running the match.

PSC .22 RF BR Shoot

Date: February 24-25, 2024
It was a good beginning for this year’s shooting season at Petti. The day started out with temperatures at -13C heading up to -6C, but it was a sunny day and the range road was good, being sanded as well. But, with the bright sun reflecting off the hard snow, there was mirage to contend with and sunshades were used. And winds were constant going from 10-20km. So, enough for a challenge to shooters.

Dan arrived with a bundle of firewood to heat up the stove and keep our freezing fingers warm. And a bunch of timbits for the shooters’ appetites; Thanks, Dan. We did manage a 500 score today; congrats Dan. He was followed closely behind by Chris and Grant, who had high X count. And a big welcome to new shooter, Mathieu who held his own on his first competition with us. We hope to see more of him. Good shooting guys.

Thanks to all who pitched in to help with Range Safety and target work.

PSC RF Fun Shoot

Date: December 03, 2023

We’re here at the range in Petitcodiac for their final shoot of the year – the Annual Rimfire Christmas fun shoot. This is always a well attended event because it is the last one and it always is so much fun as well as being quite challenging for shooters used to the standard bullseye targets.

We shot a combination of blank, (ie., “lucky turkey target”), crows, sudden death squares, and flies targets and had a lot of fun doing it.

Volker T. was the match director and organizer for this event with the assistance of John C. The scoring duties were shared by John McC., John C., Dan G., and Volker T. The targets were posted and changed by Bruce B., Chris S. and Grant H. The ROs today were Chris S., Darryl K., and Volker T. Thanks to you all for making this event a very enjoyable one.

Midway through the “match” we stopped for a lunch provided by the club. Thanks go to Barb J. for the treats and to John and Dorothy McC. for the dessert muffins. Also to Bruce B. and his wife who made delicious baked beans. Grant H. and Chris S. provided for the sandwiches. Many thanks to all of you!

After the match we gathered in the clubhouse for the awards presentations and the annual gift table. This is a Petitcodiac tradition where all shooters select a wrapped gift from a table in drawn order. This way no-one goes home empty handed.

Thank you so much to the Petitcodiac Club for this generous way to end the shooting year.

PSC Sharps and Levers Match

Date: November 26, 2023

Albeit cool temperatures of -8 in the early am, it was still a good day to shoot. Skies were clear and no precipitation. Eight hardy shooters all shot in one relay. Targets were a combination of paper and steel chosen by Director, Dan G. Rifle calibers ranged from .32 up to .45 in a combination of lever actions, rolling blocks and Sharps. All shooters had a good time and pitched in on various duties during the match. The Reporter was particularly grateful with Dan G. who supplied him with a rolling block and  ammo to shoot; made a senior happy! The top three shooters were awarded with bragging rights for the match.

Well done, guys: a good time by all.

CF BR Championship Shoot

A terrific bunch of people showed up for the Annual Centerfire Championship Shoot in Petitcodiac this past Sunday. Rifles were tuned and sparkling clean and ammo was carefully made so hopes were high for everyone.

Our hopes soared with the excellent weather conditions today. Very unusual for Petitcodiac, the wind indicators were not moving – at all. This can be a blessing or a curse. On the one hand wind adjustments were minimal but on the other hand just because a wind flag isn’t moving doesn’t mean that there is no wind affecting bullet travel somewhere on the range. You just can’t see it.

At any rate, we were happy that the wind was not a major factor in our decisions today. The temperature was a little cool in the morning but rose to a wonderful 22C later in the day. There was some strong sunlight throughout the match which produced some mirage from time to time. Some shooters had some problems with this.

The match was organised by match director Volker T. who also did the scoring with Bert deV. providing the score verification. The range safety officers were Volker and John McC. while those who walked down-range to change targets included Volker T., John McC., Bert deV., and Becky McC. Thanks folks for your work in making this a memorable match. For the activities off the range – the lunch and the awards presentation, members of the Petitcodiac Sportsman’s Club helped out. We thank Grant H. for working on the lunch and also Shelley C. for providing the wonderful desserts. John C. and Chris S. organised the awards which were presented after the match was finished.

After the match was completed, the scoring and stats done, we assembled in the club house for the award presentations. First up was the presentation of medals to members of the Petitcodiac centerfire team which had placed first earlier in the year at the team shoot. They included Tony L., Malcolm McA., Danny G., John McC., and Volker T. Congrats again fellas.

Next was a presentation to Becky McC. who had scored a clean target (a score of 300) in a centerfire match also earlier in the year.

Then Bert deV. was presented with 2 plaques – one for scoring the highest match score during the regular shooting season (300/27X) and one for shooting the highest single target sheet score (100/10X) during the regular season. He shared this latter award with Darryl K.

Then came the awards related to this championship shoot. John McC. came in first with a score of 300/20X; Becky McC. came second with a score of 300/19X and Cecil H. came third with a score of 300/13X. Congratulations on some very fine shooting.

9TH ANNUAL MARTIN F. TOPF RIMFIRE CHAMPIONSHIP

This morning we had a reminder that it’s early September and that Fall is just around the corner. The temperature, when we drove to the range in Petitcodiac was 12C and fog banks hugged the valleys. The softer maple trees along the river have started to turn colours. For some of us this is the perfect time of the year and certainly a fine time to hold the 9th Annual Martin F. Topf Rimfire Championship.

Twenty-one shooters from the southern part of New Brunswick agreed with this and shooters came from Saint John, Moncton, Fredericton and Mazerolle Settlement and many places in between. It was a spirited match and a great opportunity to hang out with friends and shooting colleagues. It is safe to say that in addition to a great match we had a lot of fun – championships in Petitcodiac are like that!

The membership of the Petitcodiac club worked hard to make this event a successful one. The match director and organizer was Volker T. who, aside from shooting, also scored the match and was the MC for the award presentations afterwards. John C., as in years past, organized the awards and prizes. Many thanks to Grant H. and Chris S. for the food and clean-up. Dan G.and Bert deV. were the score verifiers. Darryl K., Bruce B. and John McC. were the ROs while Bruce and John, along with Gerald D. set and changed the targets. The wonderful treats during the match were provided by Barb J. and Dan G. while the delicious desserts after the lunch were provided by Dorothy McC. and Barb J. Thanks to everyone who helped out – I apologise if I’m missing some folks in this category.

The weather during the match could only be described as ideal with temperatures in the 14C range in the morning and closer to 24C in the afternoon. The weatherman had predicted a lot of rain and storm clouds this weekend for the Moncton area but it must have gotten lost on the way here as we had no rain and little or no wind (we did get a little rain on the way home). There were many quiet periods and the little wind that was there varied according to one’s position on the firing line. True to the winds on the Petitcodiac range, it switched and was probably not the same for any 2 shooters.

The championship match consisted of two target sheets of 25 rimfire bulls with a high score possible of 500/50X. We witnessed some very fine shooting with very few points lost in the entire field and especially in the top scores. Congrats are due to John McC. who shot a score of 500/33X; Wayne LeB. with a 500/32X; Gerald D. with a 500/28X; Volker T. with a 500/26X and Darryl K. with a 500/20X.

After the match was completed and the scoring and stats were verified, we all trooped to the clubhouse for the year’s award presentations and the famous drawing for prizes. This began with congratulations to Grant H. who shot his first 500 match in Rimfire in 2023. Congrats Grant!

After this came the awards to the Rimfire Shooting team who won first place at the annual rimfire team shoot. This team consisted of Volker T., Brian P., John C., John McC., Danny G. and Grant H. Congratulations fellows!

Next a presentation was made to Bert deV. for the highest score during the 2023 regular shooting schedule for a single target sheet (250×19) and for the highest score in a match during the 2023 regular shooting season (500×35).

The day ended with the traditional drawing of prizes. All shooters’ were able to select a prize from the table in random order. It can be said that everyone went home tired but happy. We were only sorry that this could not have lasted longer!! But . . .other eagerly anticipated championships are coming up soon and we sure hope you’ll be there!

PSC Rimfire BR Shoot

A good number of shooters attended this week’s rimfire benchrest shoot in Petitcodiac NB. Rimfire shooting is becoming the favourite discipline of benchrest shooters this year possibly because centerfire components are so hard to find and are so expensive. Besides, it is fun and a good way to get together with friends. Just think about it  .  .  .  you can “shoot the sh*t” without ear protection on. This is a major consideration for us old fellas who are at least half deaf.

The conditions were excellent for the first relay – clear light, no rain and no “Petitcodiac wind”. The second relay was almost as lucky but did have to content with a switching wind but also lots of quiet periods. The third relay had that plus a bit of rain. The fourth relay had the same as the second but the wind came from the other side. All in all a favourable shooting day.

The shooters did not disappoint with 16 clean target sheets. When the dust had settled, 5 shooters had shot a clean match. Congratulations are due to Grant H. who shot 500 with 29X; John McClusky with 26X, Bert deV. with 23X; Matt McA. with 20X and Wayne LeB. with 17X.
Grant H., who won the match, scored his first 500 match ever and joined the illustrious Petitcodiac 500 Club. Congrats Grant!

PSC Rimfire BR Shoot

Summertime in New Brunswick and a shoot in Petitcodiac sounds like a wonderful combination. And it was! A whole bunch of people came from as far north as Mazarolle Settlement outside of Fredericton and as far south as Saint John, (and many places in between), to take part in a rimfire benchrest match. These are always hotly contested and very enjoyable – not only as a match but also as a get-together for old friends who haven’t seen each other for a while. The shoot was enjoyed by all. Congrats go to Gerald D. and Bert deV. who shot clean matches.

People to Thank!:

thanks also to Barb J. and Darryl K. for sending pics and results.

The weather was not so nice, although certainly tolerable. It was about 20C on the way down to the range and it rose slightly over the course of the match. The last couple of weeks in New Brunswick have been very humid and wet and these conditions persisted throughout this day. A towel was certainly a necessity for some shooters. During the second half of the match we were subjected to a few heavy showers pounding on the steel roof and retrieving the wind flags became a quick dash among the rain drops. The wind was actually gentle but tricky with many periods of no apparent wind activity. A debate was held among some shooters about whether it was better to wait and shoot with some wind evident or to shoot during quiet periods – some success was reported for both strategies.

Next week we’ll be in Minto when we shoot the RNBRA Rimfire Benchrest Championship in both Open and Sporter classes. Hope to see you there.

PSC Centerfire BR Shoot

Thanks to Dan G. and Becky McC. for these results.

It was a dark cloudy morning when we left for the range in Petitcodiac. It was about 20C and very humid. The sun came out from behind the clouds on a few occasions. Putting up the winds flags was done in the rain which stopped when we were done and did not recur during the entire match.

The wind was mostly from 12:00 o'clock but switched from 9:00 to 3:00 o'clock and sometimes died down altogether. It was a bit difficult to adjust to the lighting as we had to deal with cloudy conditions interspersed with bright sunlight on the targets. This led to difficult mirage at times.

Seven shooters participated on this Canada Day week end which I hope contributed to the low attendance. It’s concerning but we all know too well that everything is getting more expensive.

Shooter performance was top notch despite the small number of participants.  The top three shooters all posted perfect 300 scores. The big new today is that one of them posted her first 300 and earned the coveted PSC 300 Club patch…..very well done Becky McC. congratulations!

17th Annual .22LR  NB BR Team Shoot

Today the Petitcodiac Sportsmens Club hosted the Annual .22 Rimfire Team Shoot. A total of 19 shooters attended from the three original clubs participating in this event, including the Minto Gun Club, Lake George Gun Club and the Petitcodiac Sportsmens Club. We would have had more participants, but several were away due to travel and medical concerns. We wish them all well and full recovery.

The weather was dismal, to say the least; starting off with a downpour of rain for the first relay. But then the weather slowly improved with less rain showers and 12C temps, and light to moderate winds. But, the winds were still challenging as gathered by the reactions of the numerous windflags sitting on the range. Occasionally, a groan could be heard from the shooting benches, as a shooter whose perfect shot was enhanced by the adored wind goddess! The negative effects of the weather was soon overridden by the high spirits and camaraderie of the shooters. Sweets were partaken by all shooters courtesy of Barb J. Always a treat. Later at lunch break, the sandwiches were enjoyed with the yummy peanut butter cookies provided by Dorothy McC. Thanks ladies, we are spoiled! Thanks to Grant for organizing the lunch break.

At the end of the match, shooters gathered at the clubhouse for a presentation of medals for the top three scoring shooters: Wayne LeB. 1st , John C., 2nd, and Grant H., third. Good shooting guys. We see that Grant's new Anschutz 2013 BR50 is serving him well.

The Team Bullet trophy was presented to the 1st place Petti team having a total score of 1539x48. Lake George was 2nd with a score of 1534x62, and 3rd place went to Minto with a score of 1514x46. On behalf of PSC, thanks to our Range Officers, Dan, Bruce, and Dale, who all did a fine job keeping the relays running smoothly. And hats off to the target crew of Dan, John McC., Bruce, and to Dave for score Verifying. Thanks, Barb, for the photos. Adios for now until next week's benchrest shoot, and we'll do this again next year.

Annual Terry McNeill Centerfire Team Shoot

Date: May 07, 2023

Time is certainly moving on and this weekend we shot the Annual Terry McNeill Centerfire Team Shoot for 2023. Unfortunately, due to costs and the unavailability of centerfire components, fewer shooters than in years past attended this match. Even so, those who were there had a lot of fun in competition as well as socializing over a lunch provided by the Petitcodiac Club.

There were only 2 teams competing this year with Lake George not having sent any shooters. Team Minto was composed of Captain David C., Wayne K., Don M., Cecil H., and Bert deV.

Team Petitcodiac included Captain Volker T., Dan G., John McC., Darryl K., Tony L., and Malcolm McA. Up to 7 shooters could form a team but only the best 4 shooters were counted in the team’s official score. With this formula and with all the shooting and statistics done, it became clear that Team Petitcodiac was the 2023 Annual Terry McNeill Centerfire Team Shoot champion with an aggregate score of 1187/46X. Team Minto came second with a score of 1176/45X. Congratulations to Team Petitcodiac – good shooting guys.

The shooting conditions were mixed with a bright sun dominating the match. This caused some challenges with mirage on the orange bulls. Temperatures ranged from about 10C at the beginning to a record setting 22C in the afternoon. The wind could be described as “tricky” although other words were sometimes used. It was mostly from 12 o’clock but at times came from any other direction with different directions at the same time across the range. As a result of all this no clean matches were shot today although many single targets were outstanding.

PSC Rimfire BR Shoot

Date: April 23, 2023

Well, here we are again in Petitcodiac for the first Rimfire match of the season which had been cancelled for poor weather earlier in the year. A good bunch of shooters were present - some of whom we had not seen for many months. Welcome back especially to Brian P., Charles McQ. and Becky McC. who seem to have lost none of their skills over the winter.

Although the wind conditions were relatively benign, they were tricky and as a result some points of impact wandered surprisingly from the point of aim - much to the frustration of some shooters. As a result, only one clean match was shot - congrats go to Wayne LeB. for a very fine performance today. Now that we have warmed up and worked the bugs out of our equipment, we should see some fine shooting in the coming months.

After some pretty awful spring weather in New Brunswick, we finally had a few days of sunny, mild weather with temperatures around 16C. This was the prospect for our Centerfire Benchrest match in Petitcodiac. We experienced some very nice conditions with temperature around 6C at the beginning and 12C at the end of the match and very little wind for the first and last relays. The second relay was a bit trickier with a bit more wind, (mostly headwind switching to right) but still very light compared to our earlier shoots this year.

There were, surprisingly, only 6 shooters in attendance. Therefore, the match director became the sole RO for the match. Between relays, the scoring was done slowly so the rifles could cool down a bit. Never was so much fun had by so few shooters!

CF BR Shoot

Our benchrest shooting community has been plagued by an outbreak of Covid-19 in the past few weeks following a quarterly meeting and this, plus the fact that this weekend was the time for setting the clock forward for "Daylight Savings" time led to only few shooters being at the first centerfire match in Petitcodiac. Five hardy souls braved the relatively warm weather with temperatures rising to a sunny 6C. With the snow on the range, the glare and mirage was the worst we had seen it for a long time - a lot of guessing of where the center dot really was. The wind was also a challenge with switching and gusty conditions prevailing.

It's amazing how much fun centerfire shooting can be - especially when we've been deprived of it for such a long winter!!  Dan G. was the match director, Range Officer and head scorer today. Bert deV. was the verifier and Tony L. and Bert deV. set and changed the targets. Darryl K. was the photographer. Thanks to everyone.

Christmas .22 Shoot

Time is moving on and here it is December once again and with it comes the much awaited Petitcodiac Christmas rimfire shoot.  Twenty shooters from the south of New Brunswick showed up to have some fun together shooting fun targets that are only seen at Christmas shoots. Volker T. was the match director and head scorer with John McC. and Bert deV. verifying the scoring and stats. The ROs were Dan G., Dale H. and Bruce B. while many shooters went down range to change targets. Barb J. had some nice cookies and banana bread for the shooters who huddled around the stove or who chatted in the side room which was now insulated and had its own heater.

Many thanks to all and to John C. who organized the food and the prizes.

The weather was typical New Brunswick late fall with temperatures hovering around the 0C at the beginning of the shoot and rising somewhat later in the day. The wind was raw and fairly strong and gusty. Although there was a magnificent display of wind flags, many shooters did not pay heed to them very much at all preferring to shoot quickly and go to the stove.

At the midpoint of the shoot, we all went to the clubhouse for a meal. This was assembled by John C. with Bruce B. bringing his wife’s beans and John McC. bringing Dorothy’s baking. Dave C. brought home made brown bread while Barb J.’s gum drop cake was a hit for desert.

After the shoot was finished and the stats were all done, Volker T. thanked all contributors to this wonderful get-together. Prizes were awarded to the 4 top shooters corresponding to the 4 fun targets. Then, as has become a tradition, all shooters were able to select a prize from the gift table. All went home with grins on their faces.

CF BR Championship Shoot

Thanks to Volker T. for these results and to Darryl K. for the pics.  Today, PSC held the Centerfire Benchrest Championship match. We had a relatively small crowd of ten,  but had two relays of eager shooters. The day was sunny and clear with a temperature of 13-19C. The  wind was a light 13 -20km, especially after hurricane Fiona left our area last night. Shooting in 100 km+  winds would not have been fun. Thankfully, all of our shooters had escaped the wrath of Fiona. The  lighting was good, but with almost unending mirage, shooters were challenged to get a clear picture of  the bullseye. Congrats to all three top scoring shooters: Bert deV., Dan G., and Malcolm McA.

We broke for a short lunch which was assembled thanks to John C. It was accompanied with nice  sweets, courtesy of Dorothy McC.  At the close of the match, Team medals were presented to the PSC Team which took 1st place at the  annual CF Team Shoot. Team members were: Dan G., Darryl K., Volker T., Tony L., Bruce B., and John  McC. A plaque was presented to Malcolm McA. for the preliminary series High Match Score of 300×19. There was a four way tie among Dan G., Malcolm McA., Don M., and Bert deV. for the High Single Target score of 100×8.

Thanks to Dan G, who Directed all of the preliminary matches. Also to today’s RO’s, Bruce B. and John  McC., our photographer, Darryl K., and everyone who assisted in our match.

8TH ANNUAL MARTIN F. TOPF RIMFIRE CHAMPIONSHIP

It was another great day for our final Match after completing the .22Benchrest preliminary series. This being the Annual Martin F. Topf Championship shoot.  The weather was good; starting out with fog in the early am, which dissipated and turned into a bright sunny day. Temperatures were into the 24C range.  Winds started out very light, but had gusts to 12km range and changing direction. Shooters had choices which condition to follow. Nevertheless, one third of the competitors shot a 500 score. Good shooting guys!

At noon, we broke for a light lunch at the clubhouse. Thanks to John C. for handling all the food services and the procurement of top awards and the prize draw held afterwards.

At the end of the shoot, awards were presented to the top three shooters; Bert deV, John McC., and John M. Congrats guys; good shooting. The Club also presented awards for the Preliminary Shoots leading up to the MFT Championship. Dale H. scored a 500×35 for the High Match score. John McC. shot a 250×21 for the High Single Target.

In closing, Thanks to all who helped with the scoring, target preparation and running, Range Officering, etc. And of course we appreciated the fine treats during the match.

Thanks to Darryl K. for the pics and to Volker T. for the results.

The weather was good for this shoot. It was sunny and temperatures ranged from 14-23C. Winds were not bad; ranging from 7-17km W/SW, but mirage did cause some challenges to shooters. Running two relays made for a quick shoot.  Thanks to all who helped with the scoring , target setting and range officering, etc..

PSC RF BR Shoot

The day started out with rain, predicted in 25-40mm amounts. Well, it surely was wet for the first relay. The targets were soaking wet, and clung to one another. It was necessary to gingerly separate them and let them dry before scoring.  The scoring was a slow task for our diligent scorer.  The rain stopped for the second set of targets. Three 500 scores were posted.

The temperature was a decent 18-20C and winds were light with 10-20km gusts and some quiet spells. Timing of shots proved fruitful. Fourteen shooters enjoyed themselves regardless of the dampness which was offset by our nice wood stove. Thanks to scorer John McC., and verifier Dan G. for dealing with the ‘soft’ targets. Thanks also to all the target crew, our range officers, Bruce B. and Darryl K. (photographer), and Dan G. for the sweets.

Sadly we learned today of the passing of one of our comrades, Carl Jamieson. He was a true gentleman and friend to all. We will miss him, and send sincerest condolences to Barb and her family from all of our shooters.

It was a glorious July morning, starting out at around 20 degrees and a near nothing to 10 km wind…..that was to change…..temperature and wind speed.  While still relatively moderate, the wind was twitchy and you could get caught. Fifteen shooters participated today with six posting perfect 500’s. Another 500/35X was shot today, this time by Dale H., who also won the match. Seems like there is no limit to how high the bar is being set in respect to the level of competition we are experiencing…..we’ve come a long way!

Everyone pitched in, as per usual, to make hosting the match trouble free….thank-you everyone.

A special thank-you to Barb J. for the awesome date squares and banana bread.  Awesome day spent with friends.

5th Annual Terry F. McNeill NB Team Shoots

The Fifth Annual Terry F. McNeill NB Clubs CF BR Team Shoot was held at the Minto Gun Club on Sunday June 26, 2022 with Team Petitcodiac Sportsman’s Club victorious.

The Annual CF Team Match was hosted today by the Minto Gun Club. The weather started out with overcast skies, but soon turned into sunny weather with temps in the 28-30C range. Winds were very light but frequently changing directions and speed. Shooters had to pay attention to these changes and occasional mirage. Nevertheless, some good scores were posted. The Petitcodiac Sportsmen Team took 1st place. Scores as following.

Shooters arrived and had the opportunity for some morning sweets and beverages. Thanks to Barb J. and Dave C. for this. Barb’s homemade jam was delicious as well. The lady can cook and shoot! Dave made a quick trip at noon to supply a couple of tasty pizzas to treat the hungry crowd.

Thanks also to Scorer Don M., and Verifier John McC. And to the target changers and Range Officers. Great job done by all.

Congrats to the top Scorers, John McC., and Dave C.

.22 RF BR Shoot

The weather for this match was very cooperative with warm 20C temperatures and clear sunny skies.  Mosquitoes were around to annoy us as well, of course. The light wind conditions made for almost half of the shooters getting a 500 score, and nineteen shooters getting 250 score targets. The top scores were separated with a handful of X’s. A couple shots fired made a big difference in position status. Timing of no wind conditions was a big factor on relays.

Congrats to Wayne LeB. for achieving his entry into the PSC 500 Club Award with a Crest and inscription on the plaque. Congrats to all of the 500 shooters today as well.

Thanks to Grant, Dan and John M.  for target duty. And a big Thank You to Barb for her delicious squares and cookies, which were devoured promptly. Thanks to Barb for the pictures taken. Range Officers were Bruce and Dale; Thanks guys.  Scorer was Volker and Verifier was John McC.

Thanks to Volker T for sending these results and to Darryl K. for the picture.

It was a nice day for a shooting match. The weather was sunny, with temperatures running from 7C to 27C. Winds were light to moderate switching between left and right angles, and the occasional head/downwind. Occasionally someone got caught in a wind change. We had two relays, so the shoot went fairly fast.

Three shooters shot perfect targets with a good amount of X’s. Congrats, guys. It was a real close tiebreaker between 2nd and 3rd, requiring going down to the second bull of the second target where the X was a deciding factor. Haven’t seen that for a long time.

Thanks to Chris S. and John McC. for target work, Range officers Bruce B. and Dan G. Thanks for score verifying to Chris S., and of course to Barb J. for the excellent sweets which everyone likes.

Centerfire BR Shoot

Thanks to Danny G. for sending these results.  Awesome day today at the Petitcodiac Range with eight shooters participating in the centerfire event.  Wind was a bit twitchy but manageable.  The big issue today was some unrelenting mirage.  Very often you had to give it a best guess as the sight picture would not clear.  Regardless a good time was had by all and some people even shot pretty well.  Bert deV. prevailed with an awesome 300/18X.

Second place was had by Don M., closing with a perfect 100 in his last relay… a strong close Don, well done.  We had a tie for third between Malcolm McA. and Tony L. with Malcolm edging Tony out for the bronze medal with 13/X’s.  ROs today were Malcolm McA. and Bruce B.  Target setters and retrievers were Malcolm McA., Bruce B. and John McC.  Match director and scorer was Dan G. assisted by John McClusky as verifier.  Sweets provided by Shelly C. and Dan G. Thanks to Volker T. for sending these results:

We had a good turnout for the match today with 19 shooters. Temps were 0 to 10C, but the wood and gas stoves were running. Wind was quite breezy running at 10 to 20km gusts. It was challenging as the first relay discovered. A few verbal remarks could be heard. And there was enough wind to go around for all of the relays.  Two shooters managed to get 250 scores on individual targets; no small feat today, but no 500’s. Those who managed to hit the high 490’s deserved it.

Thanks to all for setting targets, the great sweets, scoring, and wood for the stove.

Thanks to Volker T. for sending this:

“A heavy wet snow was falling in the early hours with some areas in the south accumulating up to 4 inches. And the change was over to rain. Some shooters spotted a semi tractor trailer that had slid  off into the  highway median. Nevertheless, 16 brave shooters arrived for some camaraderie and friendly competition.

It was nice to have Wayne L. attend for the  first time and returning member Steve C. As well it was good to have Darryl K. shooting for the first time since his surgery. Glad to see you all.

Temperatures ran from 0 to 5C for the  day  with light winds of 5 to 12km gusts from the SE. Manageable, but switching conditions that caught some shooters. There were a lot of Annie’s on the bench such as Brian P.’s new red 1710ACC Comp., and a couple 1761’s. Grant H. was breaking in his new Annie BR stock as well. Always nice to see new gear on the range.  So, three perfect targets were shot with others running close behind.

Thanks to all for their help in running the match and for the  Timbits  which quickly disappeared alongside the  warm wood stove. Scoresheet following.

Your Director, Volker T.”

.22 Rimfire BR Shoot

Thanks to Volker T. for this write-up.

Today was our first shoot of the year for PSC. Eleven shooters came out after three months rest since our last shoot. The weather was mostly overcast with some sunshine. Average temperature was -8C, with mean wind speed of 20km plus some gusting, which caught everyone at some point. Even with 4 windflags and a rogue ribbon.

It was overall a good shoot and scores were close; one or two shots had a great impact on positioning. There were only 2 points separating the top 6 shooters. Good shooting, guys!

Two shooters had equipment difficulties. Thanks to Dan G. for the snow removal preparation, target frame repair, and the sweets. Charles McQ. had the stove fired up as shooters arrived.

Chris S.and Grant ran the frame and target setting. Thanks, guys. The RO’s were Chris S. and Dan G. Scorer was Volker T. and the verifier was Dan G.

.22 Christmas Shoot

This was the final shoot of the year for PSC. and also for all formal Benchrest shooting in our part of New Brunswick. The next time you’ll see us is in 2022.

This was the final shoot of the year for PSC. The weather was cooperative, more or less. No rain, snowstorms, nor excessive wind. Albeit the temperature was -6 to 0 range. And the wind was light to moderate. So the range was not overfilled with wind vanes for a change.
Both stoves were up and running. Chris set up the propane stove and Dan and his crew installed a new flu for the wood stove. Thanks, guys. Shooters were comfortable and in good spirits.  We had 22 competitors.  Four different targets were chosen by Volker for the shoot: Good Luck, Know Your Limits, Crows and Flies. Shooters soon recalled the fun they had with them last year! The winners and scores were:

Good Luck – John M. – 25
Know Your Limits – Bert deV. – 28
Crows – Cecil H. – 51
Flies – Dave C. – 35

A big Thanks to John C. for acquiring the sandwich trays, setting up the kitchen and food distribution. And also to Grant, his assistant. John C. also did a fine job in wrapping the draw gifts! Thanks, ‘Santa’. Thanks to Bruce B. for the delicious brown beans and brown rolls and kitchen help. As well to Dave C. for the best brown  bread around. Thanks to Wayne LeBl. for the cookies, and to Barb J.  for her awesome sweets.
Thanks to the RO’s : Chris S., Dan G., Darryl K. Directing and Scoring was done by Volker T. and Verifiers were Chris S. and John McC. ; thanks guys.

And a big thank you to all for helping with the target setting; everyone pitched in.

After the shooting was over, we headed to the Clubhouse for awarding the Christmas Turkey prizes for the top four scorers and followed by a prize draw for the rest of the shooters. There was also a presentation made of medals for the top 3 shooters in the last Sporter .22 shoot to 1st Chris S., 2nd Tony L. (absent) and 3rd Charles McQ.

On behalf of PSC, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happier New Year.

.22 Rifle Shoot

It was a good day to get together with the local 22 Sporter shooters at Petitcodiac. The Covid lockdown was dropped from Metro Moncton, so shooters were glad to hang out.

We noticed the slight icing on the side roads with the drop in temperatures. It was overcast, temps in the -2 to +5C range. And hardly any wind to deal with. Unusual for the Petitcodiac range. There were no wind flags used on the range.  Only a couple of streamers on the bordering trees which responded to the occasional wind gusts. Danny G., the match director, provided an array of fun targets and changing positions for the match.

Thanks to everyone for helping with target posting, and Dan for Directing and scoring. As well as his regular Timbit treats.  They went fast. Thanks to Darryl K. for the pics. Congrats to the top three shooters: Chris S., Tony L. and Charles McQ.

The PSC Rifle Committee also took this opportunity to present Darryl K. with the trophy for 1st place in the 2021 annual Martin Topf 22 Benchrest Championship. The cup replaced the plaque that he had been presented with before. Presentation by John C.

CF BR Championship Shoot

The temperature remained a comfortable 20C or so with a good bit of humidity. Winds were actually quite steady during the first relays of the match coming up the range into our faces with a few switches. During the rain storm we coped with sudden gusts that, at times, were quite strong but at other times seemed to skim over the trees without affecting the flags and targets on the range floor. If we waited for our conditions to return we were able to manage our shots quite well.

As a result, half the field shot a clean match or dropped only one point – pretty good considering. Congratulations go to Mike C. who shot a 300/23X to win the Championship. Bert deV. shot a 300/19X, John McC. a 300/18X and David C. shot 300/11X – his first ever 300 at Petitcodiac. Congrats guys – well done!

Respecting the province’s new Covid restrictions including masks, distancing and proof of vaccination, many people worked to make this a successful shoot. A special thanks to John C. who prepared the lunch and the awards presentations as well as the prizes.

After the shooting was finished and the scoring was done, we returned to the clubhouse for the awards presentations. First was the presentation of the 300Club badges to Mike C. and David C.

A second presentation of plaques was made to Danny G., John McC. and Bert deV. who had tied for the highest single target of 100/9X. Another plaque went to Bert deV. for the highest match score of 300/25X shot during the regular season.

Then – the big moment – scores were read out and a trophy was presented to Mike C. who had won this year’s Championship. A plaque for second and third was presented to Bert deV. and John McC. Finally, all those present who had not placed were entered in a draw for prizes – all shooters went home happy.

7th Annual Martin F. Topf Rimfire Championship

The wind was erratic, there was a heavy mist and dew on the ground, and we needed some heat in car on the drive down to the 7th Annual Martin F. Topf Championship in Petitcodiac. By the time we had arrived everything had changed except the gusts of wind coming from all over the range. The sun came out and the humidity increased a bit with the temperature but the wind stayed very strong for the first relay and began to subside in the second relay and then over the course of the match. At one point all the target stands had been pushed over and targets were flying from the shooting building into the woods. It was difficult to settle on a condition and to find it again.

Despite the wind some very fine shooting was witnessed with several participants shooting at least one clean target. Congrats go to Cecil H. who shot a clean 500/23X and won the match. Darryl K. also shot a clean 500/22X to come in second.

The Martin F. Topf Championship is the final rimfire benchrest match of the season for the Petitcodiac Sportmen’s Club. As such it is eagerly anticipated by all and is the occasion to remember Martin T. who was a mainstay of target shooting in New Brunswick for many years. It is also includes a meal provided by the club and organized by John C. As usual, it was a time of good camaraderie for all. Many thanks to all who lent a hand.

Target setters/changers – Tony L., Bert deV., John McC., Mike C., Matt McA. and Chris S.

After the shooting was completed we returned to the clubhouse for the awards presentations and the drawing of the prizes. Firstly, a medal was presented to each of the shooters comprising the winning rimfire team from Petitcodiac. This match was held earlier this year during the regular schedule.

Secondly, a plaque was presented to the shooters who scored the highest match scores during the regular shooting schedule as well as for the highest single target during the regular match season.

Thirdly, the awards for this final championship were presented – a trophy and cash award to the first place winner; a plaque and cash award for the second and third place shooters.

To end a very successful championship day, all those who did not place among the top 3, were entered in a draw for prizes sure to please a shooter. Everyone went home that day with smiles on their faces.

Centerfire Benchrest Shoot

The sun was out all day and the temperature hovered around 24C in the later stages of the match. The wind was very light to not visible and coming from 6 o’clock. In short – ideal conditions for shooting – except – the mirage was brutal. It was not only hard, but almost impossible, to see your target rings and patient calculation was required to figure out the center of the target. The bullet holes (depending on how small they were) were hard to find at times.

Despite this, some very good target scores were recorded with 5 shooters reaching the elusive clean targets. Congratulations are due to Guy H. who finished first with a 300/20X. Bert deV. was second with 300/18X tied by Danny G.  Mike C. shot a 300/17X and John McC. a 300/11X. These last 2 guys deserve special mention as this was Mike’s first clean match 300, while John shot with eye-surgery complications. Well done all!!

The Match Director and scorer was Danny G. and John McC. served as verifier. Mike C. and Bert deV. were the ROs. The targets were set by Tony L. and changed by John McC., Malcolm McA., Don M. and Logan G. The treats were brought by Tony L. and made by Shelly C. Danny G. brought the Timbits. Thanks to all.

Sure, and it was a glorious day for a shootin’ match in Petitcodiac. The sun was shining as if there were no tomorrow and there were a few fluffy balls of clouds skating across the sky. The wind was kind, coming mostly from the left with a few switches and plenty of quiet times. The conditions, with the exception of mirage, could hardly have been better. PSC Centerfire BR Shoot

    Date: July 05, 2021

When we got ready to leave this morning it was 9C outside – I think it didn’t get any warmer than 13C during the day. What a change from a few days ago when it was 32 to 35C. It rained all day and remained overcast – good for sighting without mirage. Bad for target changers who got very wet. The wind was steady but gusted strongly from time to time. It was not hard to find a condition in which the wind flags appeared the same but hidden in this were tricky winds that could not be easily seen and which resulted in no clean match scores today. Still the 12 shooters who attended had a lot of fun and shot reasonably well.

Very good shooting indeed.  Dale H. got second and Matt McA. brought home the bronze.

Barb J. brought two huge plates of cookies that were awesome! Gone in a flash!   Bruce B. and Darryl K. were the ROs today and Matt McA., Bruce B. and Chris S. set targets, (I may have missed someone there, sorry )  John McC. was the score verifier and Dan G. was both the Match Director and scorer.   Thanks everyone and a Happy Fathers Day!

4TH Annual Terry McNeill CF TEAM SHOOT

    Date: June 06, 2021

It was a beautiful summery day in New Brunswick although the weatherman had predicted some showers. It was overcast but still pretty bright – good light conditions for target shooting. The wind was generally light from 6:00 o’clock with a few switches from time to time. Even though the black flies and mosquitos were pretty bad, it was a very good day to be in Petitcodiac for the 4th Annual Terry McNeill Centerfire Team Shoot.

Each club fielded a team with various number of members. Of these, the four top shooters contributed to the team score. Because Lake George did not have 4 members present, Tony L. graciously volunteered to shoot with them. The host club was Team Petitcodiac which provided the man-power to run the match and also, thanks to John C. provided a lunch for all shooters.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this annual event so much fun.

Congratulations to Team Minto which shot an impressive score and won the event.

    INDIVIDUAL SHOOT PICTURES AND RESULTS

These are the result of individual shooters during the 4th Annual Terry McNeill Team Match. Each shooter shot 30 rounds for score in 3 relays during the match. Congratulations to John McC. who shot a 300/19X and to Bert deV. who shot 300/25X.

Although the weather was generally pretty nice with gentle winds, there was a severe problem with mirage in the relays that took place later in the day. Several shooters felt the pain of shooting at the wrong moment when the target danced in the scope.

    PSC Rimfire BR Shoot

    Date: May 23, 2021

It was a wonderful day for a rimfire benchrest shoot in Petitcodiac. Although the weatherman had called for rain this was not supposed to happen until the shoot was finished – we thought. The shoot started out with an overcast sky, very little wind and lots of blackflies. The wind early on was manageable with a few switches. Halfway through the 4th relay we had some rain that developed into a cloud burst well until after the match was completed. Although lots of water came off the roof, during this time there was absolutely no wind – the tails on the flags were hanging still and bedraggled with no movement. With some patience some very nice scores were shot during this time. A warm welcome to new shooter Richard P.

It didn’t look like it would be a very good day for shooting when we started out in the morning. It was cold (actually very close to 0C), quite windy at times and from time to time we had some showers. This did not change during the day. The shoot ranged from 4C to 11C from start to finish and the wind ranged from 18km to 35km/hr. It was mostly from 6 o’clock although gusts could come from any direction and there were also time when it was still for a while. It was wise to wait for your condition but this was no guarantee of a 10X. We all ate a little humble pie but we had fun none-the-less.

PSC NB Clubs .22 Team Shoot

    Date: April 25, 2021

Well today was an interesting event for sure – a 100yd rimfire match in pretty challenging winds. The wind gods favoured us by providing sunshine and no rain plus nice temperatures. The winds were fairly light (and tricky) before noon, but afterwards, the wind did pick up with varying direction and intensity. Shooters scoring “Tens” in the first relays were happy to get “Nines” at times on the second relay. It was all good competition and camaraderie – a full day of good shooting.

Mid-way through the match we stopped for a meal. Thanks to John C. for arranging the food and facilities. Everyone was well fed. Thanks also to Dorothy McC. for the tasty sweets. And to Barb J. as well for the tasty sweets enjoyed in the shooting hut throughout the match.

Thanks to all the people helping out with Range Officer duty including Mike C., Bruce B. and Darryl K. Thanks also to those who helped to change the targets including Charles McQ., Chris S., Dan G., Dale H., and John McC. Thanks also to John McC. and John M. for verifying the scores and stats. Thanks especially to Volker T. who organized the match, was the match director and did all the scoring.

Unfortunately, there was a hiccup in the end-of-match calculations which showed Minto Team #1 as having taken first place. Further review,  long after the shoot was over, found an arithmetic error which placed them behind Team PSC.  Apologies for this error to those shooters affected. Your Match Director, Volker T.

Individual medals were presented to the highest 3 individual shooters. Mike C. shot the best individual score of 385/4X; Volker T. was second best with 379/13X and Matt McA. was next with 377/12X. The top team will have its members’ names engraved on the trophy.

    TEAM PETITCODIAC – TOTAL BEST 4 SHOOTERS = 1492/30
    Volker T – 379/13X; Darryl K. – 373/2X; Chris S. – 371/6X; Dan G. – 369/9X; Barb J. – 364/9X; Charles McQ. – 361/6X; John C. – 361/5X

    TEAM MINTO #1 – TOTAL = 1482/34
    Matt McA. – 377/12X; Bert deV. – 372/5X; John McC. – 369/10; Conrad L. – 364/7X

    TEAM MINTO #2 – TOTAL BEST 4 SHOOTERS = 1467/32X
    Mike C. – 385/4X; Cecil 374/11X; David C. – 370/8X; Gerald D. – 338/9X; Wayne K. – 305/5X

    TEAM LAKE GEORGE – BEST 4 SHOOTERS = 1460/23X
    Dale H. – 373/7X; Guy H. – 373/7X; Gerry J. – 359/5X; Bruce B. – 355/4X; John M. – 343/4X; Norbert S. – 325/4X

THE FIRST SHOOT OF 2021 !

Thanks to the precautions around the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been unable to get together in groups for the past few months. This has prevented us from starting our normal shooting schedule until now. So here we are today, very glad to be able to travel outside our own region and very glad to be able to get together to do some chin-wagging and shooting.

As the scores show, we were a bunch of rusty shooters with gear that needed checking and tuning. There were the “stuck case so you had to rap the bolt” issues as well as a scope that seemed to jump a couple of MOA in elevation without apparent reason. There were the usual rusty shooter “yank on the trigger” issues. Also the old eyes that could not adjust too well to the mirage and bright glare of the sun – hard to focus on the flags with the snow so bright white. We seem to have lost some muscle memory from not having shot since last November and had even forgotten some parts of our normal routine.

But there were also, and no score can indicate these, big grins of accomplishment and sheer joy when things went right and we poked a hole right there in the middle where we were aiming – several times in a row!

By the way, the sun was very bright today with no cloud cover. This produced mirage on the target face which made it almost impossible to see the outline of the 10 ring at times. The wind was pretty wild with 20+km/hr winds from 6:00 o’clock but switching from 3:00 to 9:00 o’clock. The temperature was hovering around the 0 celcius mark most of the day and with the wind-chill it was quite uncomfortable at times – hard to feel a trigger with frozen stubby fingers.

We changed things up a bit this year at our annual .22 Sporter competition with some different targets combined with introducing a couple of different shooting positions. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Thanks everyone for helping out. It sure makes the endeavor less stressful on this end. After the dust settled three individuals emerged victorious:

    • Gold medal won by Dan G.,
    • Silver medal by Volker T.,
    • Bronze medal won by Bruce B.

    Date: September 27, 2020

For our first sanctioned IPSC shoot of 2020 we had a great turnout and could not have asked for a better day! 11 total participants showed up, along with a few spectators, which is awesome for such short notice! With 7 stages set up, we made excellent use of the small space we have! We would like to congratulate our winners: Open class: Mo Hepworth, Standard Class: Jamie Knowles, Classic: Roger Cherry, and Production: Ronnie Layton. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to our volunteers, who spent their weeks building target stands, walls, designing courses and making sure this could all be a possibility. You all know who you are.

TUESDAY NIGHT ACTION SHOOTS: We plan to continue our Tuesday night practice/action shoots, where we will be going over fundamentals of accuracy, speed and safety, and just having some fun shooting with like-minded folks. With focus on drawing/shooting and other basics, anyone is welcome regardless of skill level. Depending on the week and turnout, we will also set up small courses of fire that involve a bit of moving around to help people get more comfortable with safe movement. (With nights getting shorter, we’re limited on what we can do, but still want to offer the range for practice/training.)

As of writing this, I believe there are still spots available for Black Badge Course in Hampton in October. If you, or someone you know is interested, reach out and we will put you in contact with the right people.

    PSC Centerfire Championship Shoot

    Date: September 27, 2020

Today was a beautiful fall day in New Brunswick with light overcast conditions that were just perfect for seeing the targets. As it warmed up a little, we shed our coats and rolled up our sleeves and had to adjust to a bit of mirage. The wind was also benign with few surprises, although in Petitcodiac the wind always has a little twist here and there, and today was no exception. We had to contend with a gust or two mostly in the final relay. It was also a day in which it was wise to consider multiple flags rather than rely on “just the one in line with your target”.

Mysteriously, there were only 9 shooters in attendance. We had lots of fun and enjoyed the company as well as the lunch provided by John C. with dessert cooked up by Dorothy McC. During the shooting we had cookies made by Barb J., who usually does not shoot centerfire but who drove Cecil H. and stayed to help out. Timbits were in abundance thanks to Dan G. Thanks to all of you for the good food!

Today Volker T. was the match director and head scorer with Dan G. verifying the scores and stats. Targets were set and changed by John McC., Bruce B. and Bert deV. The Range Officers were John McC. and Darryl K. Thanks to everyone for your help today.

After the shooting was done, we returned to the PSC Club House for presentation of the awards. The highest target score of 100/10X was shot during the regular season, (which was a bit short this year due to the Covid-19 epidemic), by Bert deV. who also had the highest match score (300/24X).

Today’s championship had 4 shooters who shot a 300 target. Congratulations are due to Volker T., John McC., Cecil H. and Bert deV.

6th ANNUAL MARTIN F. TOPF RIMFIRE CHAMPIONSHIP

    Date: September 13, 2020

It was a lovely “fall” day in New Brunswick even though the summer has a couple of weeks to go. The temperature on the way to Peticodiac was a little cool but there was a hint of humidity and when the temperature came up in the late morning and early afternoon it did become a little more muggy – but not enough to hinder our shooting or our enjoyment of getting together for the 6th Annual Martin F. Topf Rimfire Championship. This is a great time of year for shooting!

Yes there was some wind – or to say it more correctly, the Petitcodiac winds did not disappoint. As is typical, the first relay was very quiet with an occasional hint of a breath of wind from the right. Five 250s and six 249s were shot during that first relay. This was cut in half during the second relay which gives you some idea of how the wind conditions had changed. It was stronger, came from several directions, dipped and curled and rose from the range floor.

Looking at one particular wind-flag gave a false reading of what the bullet had to go through on it’s way to the target. This may have worked during the first relay but at least 2 or 3 flags were necessary to make a predictable shot. Even then, there were some close calls and heart rates went up and down – a lot – during the shooting. It was challenging.

Congrats for some fine shooting are due to Dan G. who not only shot a 500 target but was able to keep the shots close earning 27Xs. Also to John McC and Bert deV. congrats for their 500 targets.

Covid-19 played a role as well – not only in the shooting but also in the awards presentations and the lunch. John C. had provided for a nice lunch which was eaten between the first and second relays. Thanks to Dorothy McC. for the dessert. All the usual precautions (2m apart, hand cleaning, face masks, shooting screens etc.) were observed as much as possible.

The match was organized by match director Volker T. who also was the head scorer. Dan G. verified the scoring and stats. The range safety officers were Dan G., Darryl K. and John McC. Targets were set and changed by Chris S., Grant H. and Mike C. My apologies if I missed anyone. There were some good cookies, brought by Barb J., available during the shooting and Dan G. brought the Timbits. Many many thanks to all who made this such an enjoyable shoot.

After the shooting was done, we all helped to break down the range and then went to the clubhouse for the awards presentations. The awards for the best single target during the regular schedule was shared by Bruce B. and Mike C. with a score of 250/18X. The high match score was awarded to Volker T. with a score of 500/32X. The top 3 shooters in today’s match received cash awards, and personal trophies and plaques.

A very nice feature of the Petitcodiac Sportsmen’s Club is the draw for prizes for those who did not receive a shooting award. This was organized by John C. Many thanks John and the PSC for a very enjoyable day of shooting.

It was a rainy day when Tropical Storm Laura decided to fizzle out over the maritimes. Lots and lots of rain that came in several cloudbursts. Strangely though, there was very little wind that accompanied this rain and the temperature remained quite pleasant. In fact, there was absolutely no wind during the first half of the match and only a little later on.

Today, Volker T. was the match director and head scorer with Dan G. verifying the scoring and stats. Dan G. who had one of the 2 raincoats at the match was also a target changer along with Malcolm McA. and Don M. The ROs were Darryl K. and Bert deV. Dan G. brought the Timbits. Thanks to Barb J. for the awesome oatmeal cookies which disappeared pretty fast – kudos to you. Thanks to Dan G. for supplying the Timbits. Everyone enjoyed themselves and had a good time.

The weather was extremely cooperative with sunny skies, temperatures not exceeding 26C, and light wind. At times the wind did switch around a bit and shooters had to decide whether to play the waiting game with the clock or bet on their planned hold. It all turned out very well and congrats are due to the five shooters who shot a 500 score. Special congrats to Dale H. for achieving his 500 Club crest from PSC. In addition, a lot of good scores were shot today. The PSC high target score was matched today as well, not beat – still room for improvement!

Thanks to all who helped with the target setting, scoring, score verification and RO-ing.

Today was a good day at the Petitcodiac range for a CF Match. The day started out at 6C on the drive from Queens County. There was a lot of fog over the rivers and streams and some of the open fields. A nice cool way to start the day.

It has really been hot in southern New Brunswick. Today, at the match, was no exception as temperatures rose to 30C (along with a heat warning). But it started out with clear skies and light wind of 6 to 14km. This made for several 100 scores. Congrats to Bert deV. and Dan G. who both pinned 300 scores. It was also good to see John McC. back on the shooting bench and shooting in top form after a long period of illness. We are happy to see your recovery to good health.

Skies were clear, the temperature was 28C by the afternoon making it a bit hot and humid, (especially when wearing a covid mask). The wind was light but occasionally it played some games with wind indicators making them go in opposite directions. Its “Petti-wind” – what more to say.

Congrats to John M. for the only 500 shot, and earning his long awaited PSC 500 Crest. Thanks to the ROs Dan G., Darryl K. and Bruce B. Thanks to both Joanne S. and Dan G. for the tasty sweets and the Timbits.

Well, PSC got the opportunity to run a rifle shoot since last March. We were in limbo due to Covid concerns and a forest fire prevention lockdown. I think everyone were glad to connect with our shooting buddies and enjoy a nice day at the range. The weather was great except for a very brief cloudburst. Good lighting, little wind, but some wind activity that did have consequences for some shooters. But two shooters did get 300’s. Congrats guys!

Thanks to our RO’s, Bert and Darryl. And target setters Dan and Charles. Everyone came prepared and adhered to the new normal social distancing rules.

    Scores attached.

    PSC Centerfire BR Shoot

    March 14, 2020
March 14 started out as a pretty cool day. The sun came out and warmed things up a bit. Today the story really was about the intensity of the sun on the white snow and on the target sheets. The glare was brutal and sometimes the mirage waves off the target sheets made it impossible to see the 10 ring – much less the centre dot. Many shots had to to be made after a substantial wait for the mirage to lift. This happened when the wind picked up across the range. Unfortunately, the wind was mostly from up-range which did not clear the mirage as well. So often the shot was made by guessing at the centre a formula which often worked well but which occasionally cost the shooter a point. It was certainly costly in terms of shooting 10Xs. Nevertheless, we did have some good luck and the scores were not at all bad considering the conditions. Congrats to Bert deV. who shot a 300/12X.

The match director was Dan G. who also scored the targets along with Mike C. who verified the scoring. Targets were set and changed by Tony L., Shelly C., Dan G., Becky McC., Mike C., John McC. and Brian P. Range officers were John McC. and Tom N. The treats were brought by Shelly C. and Timbits by Dan G. Bert deV. was the photographer.

Thanks to Volker T. for the write-up and to Volker and Darryl K. for the pictures. It was a good day to finally start our BR series at Petitcodiac Sportsman’s Club with a Rimfire Open class shoot. Shooters en-route to the shoot may have run into an occasional light flurry but we missed the snow at the shoot – I mean it didn’t occur! LOL. Temperature was in the -6C range an overcast with light winds of 12km/hr gusting to 20. It was “Groundhog Day”, but none showed up – just as well. Hopefully the lack of shadows predict an early spring.

Congrats to Gerard D. and Darryl K. who started the year out with 500/27X and 500/23X respectively. The stove was warmed to keep shooters on waiting relays nice and warm. There was also ample delicious goodies to enjoy – thanks to Barb J. and Dan G.
